"I'm Deaf and Mute; and that itself, makes all the difference."

I am Renato V. Mariano, born and raised in Baguio, Philippines. Eldest among seven children, I was drawn to arts ever since I was 4 years old. My mother would often scold me for drawing on the walls, and when I was 6, I drew something on the wall that took her by surprise. I told her that she appeared to me the night before. Tears rolled down her eyes as she traces her hands on my drawing of the Virgin Mary.My first winning piece was , when I was 8 years old. The event was a live painting contest and I was the youngest among the entire great artists. Our theme was to paint something about unity, so I drew the president of the Philippines overlooking the entire country with all the people from different regions. As an adult, I’ve been invited to do murals at schools and churches. I became a teacher at a Deaf catholic school in Baguio, but besides that I also have a small art studio in the city where I spend most of the time sculpting and painting after school hours. One day, my mother told me to throw the newspaper stacks that were sitting all musty and dusty by the window. I said, I’ll do it tomorrow, but I remember staring at it for a long time. The following day I went over to my auntie’s house for lunch and found myself glaring at this one little miniature figurine house. I borrowed it and took it home to examine. While I was looking at it closely, my eyes stared passed the figurine and in to the newspaper stack. I grabbed the newspapers and started cutting, rolling, and gluing pieces together until it was the bigger size of the miniature house figurine. When I took it back to my auntie’s house she said, what did you do with that? Then I have my other hand in my back and surprised her with the exact copy of the house, only it was made of recycled newspapers. After, I’ve created over 50 pieces of different kinds of sculptures made entirely of recycled items; such as, broom sticks, newspapers, copy papers, colored papers, etc.
